Advocating for Nutrition Education Integration in Schools

National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum. This initiative aims to cultivate a generation of healthy and globally competitive Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, structured nutrition education in schools is essential for building a strong foundation of nutrition knowledge from an early age.

Nutrition education goes beyond just food – it shapes the future. Children who learn about nutrition will grow up to be healthy, critical thinkers who can contribute positively to society. Schools provide an ideal platform for imparting this important knowledge systematically, helping students understand the relationship between diet, health, and overall well-being.

The proposed curriculum will cover topics such as basic nutrition concepts, food groups, nutrient functions, and the impact of unhealthy eating habits. By educating students about nutrition, they will be able to make informed decisions about their dietary choices, leading to a healthier lifestyle and preventing diseases like obesity and diabetes.

Additionally, practical skills like cooking and gardening will be incorporated into the curriculum, enabling students to apply what they learn in their daily lives. Integrating nutrition education into schools is expected to create a united effort across schools, families, and communities to promote balanced nutrition throughout society.

BGN, as the agency responsible for national nutrition programs, has already implemented various educational initiatives, including social media outreach and promotional materials for the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program. They are now urging all stakeholders to support the integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum as part of Indonesia’s initiative to create a Golden Generation by 2045.

Ikeu emphasized that true success in the Free Nutritious Meals Program can only be achieved when paired with comprehensive nutrition education that resonates with all segments of society. The long-term goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lives, prevent diseases, and improve overall quality of life for the future generation.
